Income Tax Refunds

This time of year, I get people flooding into my office ready to retain me with their income tax refunds. It's a busy time of year for all of us attorneys who deal ordinary people and consumers, as opposed to practicing corporate law and always sitting behind a desk somewhere. Paying for a flat-fee Chapter 7 Bankruptcy with your income tax refund is perfectly fine, and may be advisable if it is your only opportunity to have the funds for the bankruptcy. However, for those of you with complex divorce or custody issues, please keep in mind that family-law retainers are not flat fee and you will often exceed the retainer. When speaking with an attorney, be realistic, open and honest about your ability to pay any further funds to fight, in the event of a court battle, should the case drag on and require that. Of course, I am always willing to work with clients who in a financial bind and at least trying to pay something. Anyhow, for those of you who receive income tax refunds, spend it wisely.
